How Permits Central works in San Francisco

San Francisco's Department of Building Inspection publishes building permits on the city's DataSF portal. Permits Central reads that official dataset, preserves the raw records, and organizes new permit activity by trade.

We query the DataSF building permits dataset in bounded batches, store new and changed records, and classify each description into trades. We are still loading San Francisco's long permit history.

Why monitor San Francisco permits

San Francisco's dense, older building stock produces constant alteration, seismic retrofit, re-roofing, electrical and plumbing work. Permit descriptions are detailed, so contractors can see which projects match their trade before the work is underway.
